When you're enjoying the lake a pontoon rental from Northern Lakes Boat Company, a little boating know-how can go a long way. One of the most useful skills to know—especially when docking the boat—is how to tie a few types of knots, including the cleat hitch.

Whether you're pausing for a lakeside lunch or docking at your vacation rental, knowing how to secure your boat properly helps keep you, your passengers, and the boat safe.

What Is a Cleat Hitch?

A cleat hitch is a simple, secure way to tie a dock line to a cleat—the T-shaped metal fittings you'll find on docks and the boats in our fleet. It’s used to keep boats in place while docked, protecting them from drifting due to wind, waves, or current.

At Northern Lakes Boat Company, we show every renter the basics during check-in, but here's a refresher for when you're out on the water.

When You'll Use a Cleat Hitch

  • Docking at marinas or public piers

  • Securing the boat overnight at a lakeside cabin

How to Tie a Cleat Hitch

Tying this knot takes just a few seconds and can be done with one hand (once you're practiced). Here’s how:

Wrap Around the Base

Take the rope and make one full turn around the base of the cleat. This anchors the line and absorbs most of the strain.

Cross Over in a Figure-8

Loop the rope over the top of the cleat, forming a figure-8: over one horn, then under and around the other (3).

Lock It Down

Make a final loop in the rope, twist it into a half hitch, and slip it over one horn of the cleat (5). This locks the knot and prevents it from slipping.

Tug to Test

Give the line a firm pull. If the cleat hitch is tied correctly, it will hold fast—even under tension from wind or waves.

Helpful Tips from Our Dock Crew

  • Always start with a base wrap for security—don’t skip this step!

  • If you’re returning the boat shortly, you can skip the locking hitch, but for longer stops, always include it.

  • If you're unsure, ask our crew before heading out—we’re happy to demonstrate it.

Stay Safe & Enjoy Your Time on the Water

At Northern Lakes Boat Company, we’re committed to making your boating experience as safe, easy, and enjoyable as possible. Whether you're a first-time renter or a seasoned captain, mastering the cleat hitch is a simple skill that adds confidence and safety to your day on the lake.

So next time you tie up at a dockside café or pause at a scenic cove, you’ll know exactly how to secure your boat like a pro.

Need a demo? Just ask when you pick up your rental—we’re always happy to help.

Happy boating from all of us at Northern Lakes Boat Company!
