Northern Lakes Boat Company: Best Practices for Safe Boating - Anywhere

A few years ago, six walrus hunters from Shishmaref, AK, found themselves trapped by pack ice in an open Lund, several miles from their village. With no shelter from the harsh Arctic conditions and limited food or water, their options were few. Using a handheld marine VHF radio, they called for help. A USCG rescue helicopter and crew were dispatched from Kodiak, AK, to undertake a 1,500-mile round-trip mission to rescue the group. Thanks to their preparation, the hunters were able to call for assistance and withstand the elements until help arrived.
The lesson? Whether you’re underway Arctic waters or Northern Michigan’s serene inland lakes, some boating essentials apply universally:

Redundant Power Sources: Two boat batteries are better than one. When the stereo drains one, the second ensures your engine will start.
Redundant Communication: Cell phones are convenient but unreliable on the water due to limited coverage, battery life, and potential water damage. A handheld marine VHF radio is affordable, durable, and a critical safety tool.
Float Plan: Always inform someone where you’re going and when you’ll return. This simple precaution has saved countless lives—including many I’ve witnessed firsthand.
