A pontoon boat is a great option to explore Michigan’s inland lakes, but before you set out, it’s important to ensure your vessel is equipped with all required safety gear. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Coast Guard have specific safety regulations for boats of this size. Here’s what you’ll need on board:

1. Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

  • A U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket is required for each person on board.

  • Children under 6 years old must wear a properly fitted life jacket at all times, while underway. Life jackets should also be worn by any person with limited ability to swim or tread water, regardless of age. Use good judgement here.

  • A throwable flotation device (Type IV) is required on boats 16 feet or longer, including pontoons.

2. Fire Extinguishers

  • A B-I fire extinguisher is required for pontoon boats with enclosed fuel tanks or storage areas.

  • If your pontoon has an outboard motor with a portable fuel tank, a fire extinguisher is still highly recommended for safety.

3. Sound-Producing Devices

  • A whistle, air horn, or other sound-producing device is required to signal other boaters or in case of emergency. Your boat's horn meets this requirement as long as it works.

4. Navigation Lights

  • If operating between sunset and sunrise or during periods of reduced visibility, your pontoon must have:

    • Red and green sidelights (visible from at least one mile away).

    • A white all-around stern light (visible from at least two miles away).

5. Visual Distress Signals (VDS)

  • Not required for inland lakes, but recommended for added safety.

  • If operating on federally controlled waters like the Great Lakes, VDS (flares or an electronic distress light) is required.

6. Backfire Flame Arrestor

  • Required for pontoon boats with inboard gasoline engines to prevent fire hazards.

7. Ventilation System

  • If your pontoon has an enclosed fuel tank or engine compartment, it must have a ventilation system to prevent gas fumes from accumulating.

8. Emergency Cut-Off Switch (ECOS)

  • If your pontoon is equipped with a tiller or console-operated motor, an engine cut-off switch must be worn by the operator when the boat is in motion.

10. Michigan Boating Registration & Certificate of Number

  • Your pontoon must be registered with the state of Michigan, and the registration numbers must be displayed on both sides of the boat.

  • Carry your Certificate of Number (registration) on board at all times.
