Shop for the “Cheapest” Winterization, Shrink-Wrap & Storage: But ask these questions first.

Many boat-owners understandably shop around for the lowest prices for winterization, shrink-wrap and boat storage. I get it - boats are expensive, and costs are on the rise, so saving a few dollars feels good. Before you hand your boat over to the lowest bidder though, it’s worth asking them a few key questions to make sure you’re comparing apples to apples and are truly protecting your investment. The following questions will get your started.

Shrink-Wrap:

o   What thickness plastic do you use to wrap boats?

Thinner plastic is cheaper—but it may not stand up to northern Michigan snow loads or winds. 7mm is the standard.

o   Do you stand by your work? If it fails mid-winter, will you re-wrap it at no cost?

o   Will you ensure the boat is dry before you wrap it? Do you have indoor space to work?

o   Do you use moisture packets and vents?

Winterization:

o   What type of fluids and filters do you use for oil changes? Quality products matter. Cutting corners here can cause costly engine problems in the future.

o   Are you insured?

Fly-by-night mobile shrink-wrappers and “mechanics” pop up every fall. They scoop up work by offering the lowest prices and then disappear. Please make sure they carry insurance before winterizing your boat. And check a references and reviews.

Storage:

o   Is indoor storage truly indoor or is it under a pavilion or inside a 3-sided structure? If it’s on a rack, where is your trailer kept?

o   Make sure the facility has insurance and make sure yours is up to date as well.

o   Sign a lease. An agreement in writing is important for all parties involved.

o   What type of security do they offer, a fence, cameras, etc.?

o   Are rodent control measures taken?

o   Are nearby trees harboring squirrels, sap or dead limbs waiting to fall?
